Early in 1970 BLACK SABBATH released their eponymous titled first album. By the end of 1970 they had released “Paranoid”, which was to bear them a UK-Top Ten-single and on this album deliver perhaps their most revered set of songs.This album is bursting at the seams with huge, heavy, classic guitar riffs. All of them instantly recognizable as belonging to Tony Iommi. Really there isn’t much to say about the quality on offer here. From the opening barrage of “War Pigs”, to the often-copied “Paranoid”, to the lull and psychedelic chants of “Planet Caravan” to the languid beauty of “Electric Funeral” through to the narcotic fuelled wanderings of “Fairies Wear Boots”, with Ozzy’s lyrics is fine form.
Far from the demonic, Satanic image that followed the band around, it is easy to say that “Paranoid” was written under and deals directly with the effects of habitual drug use. Regarded by many as SABBATH’s most popular release it is still a strong testimony to an enduring band.
